Amit Kumar
Amit Kumar was born on 3 July 1952 in Bombay, India. He became famous for his singing career. His songs include “Choli ke peeche”, “Mere sapnon ki rani”, “Kya hua jaa raat hai”, “Jhoom barabar Jhoom”, “Tumse milenge hum tumhaari”, “Suno suno kaun se bhi ho gaye”.
He won Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for the song “Yeh mera dil yeh dostiyaan” in the film Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. In 1999 he received National Award for the same category for the song “Tujhe pyaar ka namak ho jaaye”.
In 2012, he was awarded Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards given by Government of India.
Early life
Kumar was born on August 5th, 1947, in Calcutta, India. His father, Kishore Kumar, was a popular playback singer in Hindi cinema during the 1950s and 1960s. He died in 1983; Kumar followed him into showbiz. As a child, Kumar used to accompany his mother, Ruma Guha Thakeria, on stage. He entered the film industry at age 13, playing the role of young Kishore Kumar in the biopic Pyaasa (1957). Later, he played the lead role in the musical drama Aar Paar (1959), opposite his sister Supriya Pathak. Kumar began singing songs himself, and composed music for several films, including the hit song “Humne Dekho” from the 1961 movie Shrimati 420.
He married his childhood friend and fellow actress Hema Malini in 1966, and together they have three children—Amit, Arpita and Abhishek. Kumar has been married four times and divorced twice. His current wife, Suman Singh, gave birth to his daughter, Archana, in 2011. Kumar has been active in politics since the 1970s, having joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). He served as a member of Parliament from 1984 to 1989, representing West Bengal in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian parliament. He was expelled from the party in 1992 over differences with CPI(M)’s leader, Harkishen Singh Surjeet. Kumar left the Congress Party in 2004, saying that it did not represent people like him.
In 2007, Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament. He resigned in 2008, citing health reasons.
Singing career
Kumar Sanu was born into a musical family. He had been singing since childhood. At the age of 15, he participated in the national level competition organized by All India Radio, where he won the Best Singer Award. Later, he joined the Film Institute of India and graduated in 1974. He began working with music director Rajesh Roshan, composing songs for films like ‘Darwaza’ (‘The Gate’, 1978), ‘Des Pardes’ (‘The Prisoner’, 1978), ‘Jagriti’ (‘Destiny’, 1979). In 1980, he got married to actress Shobhna Samartha. They are blessed with three children – daughter Avantika, son Arjun, and daughter Aditi.
In 1981, Kumar Sanu and Asha Bhosle recorded a duet called, “Mera Dil Mera Dushman”. This song became very famous and it was played almost every day on Indian radio stations. In 1982, he released another album, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’. In 1983, he released his third album, ‘Tum Se Toh Thak Jaye’. After recording some hit songs, he left Bollywood and went to Bombay to pursue his singing career.
He performed in many stage plays including ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’, ‘Ganga Maiyya Tohe Phere’, ‘Anokhi Ada’, ‘Shrimaan Shrimati’, ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’, ‘Rangila Ghoda’, ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’, ‘Hum Paanch’, ‘Zindagi Ek
1980s
Kumar began his career in 1980 with the movie Aao Na Ye Saapan Bune, where he performed the hit song “Laila O Laila”. He had earlier sung the song “Jab Se Tumhein Hain Dil Mein” for the same director, Basu Devdas. His second film was Qurbani, where he sang “Aao Naye Saapna” with Asha Bhosle.
In 1982, Kumar sang “Ka Janu Main Sakiniya” with Lata for the film Ram Lakhan, directed by Yash Chopra. This became one of the most popular songs ever recorded by Kumar. Later, Kumar sang “Hum To Apke Deewane Hai” along with Rafi for the 1983 film Love Story starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This was followed by another hit “Mere Angne Wale Ki Shaadiyan” with Rekha for the 1984 film Jaanwar.
After the success of Love Story in 1985, Kumar sang “Yaad Aayi Raahi Hai” along with Lata for the 1986 film Yaadein. He sang “Tujhe Dekho Meraa Baap” for the 1987 film Tezaab. In 1988, Kumar sang “Teri Kasam Pukare” for the 1989 film Mazaaq.
He sang “Naina Maana Naino” for the 1990 film Ghar Ka Chiraag. In 1991, Kumar sang “Humko Teri Nazron Neend Hamari” for the 1992 film Jai Shree Krishna. In 1993, Kumar sang “Chalte Chalte” for the 1994 film Hum Kisise Kum Naheen. In 1995, Kumar sang “Shikwa” for the 1996 film Swarg.
In 1997, Kumar sang “Humnav Dikhaya” for the 1998 film Sautela Bhai. In 1999, Kumar sang “Ek Din Aur Ek Do Abhi” for the 2000 film Mohabbat. In 2001, Kumar sang “Sun Suniyaan” for the 2002 film Mujhe Pehchaan Milenge. In 2003, Kumar sang “Ab Toh Thok Jaye” for the 2004 film Jab We Met. In 2005, Kumar sang “Tu Hi Tu Hi” for the 2006 film Om Shanti Om. In 2007, Kumar sang “Saathiya” for the 2008 film 3 Idiots. In 2009, Kumar sang “Zara Si Zindagi” for the 2010 film Rockstar. In 2011, Kumar sang “Main Ho Gayi Duniya” for the 2012 film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. In 2013, Kumar sang “Kaise Kahoon” for the 2013 film Kick. In 2014, Kumar sang “Kaisa Koi” for the 2016 film Bangistan. In 2017, Kumar sang “Na Jaane Kyun” for the 2018 film Badlapur.
