Early life and family
Anirudh Ravichandran was born on 16 May 1990 into a middle class Tamil Brahmin family living in Kolkata, India. His father Ravi Raghavendran is an Indian film actor while his mother Lakshmi Ravichandran is a classical dancer. He had a younger sister named Nithya Ravichandran. He was raised in Mumbai, where he attended school at the prestigious Loyola College. As a child, he used to accompany his parents to dance performances. At age 14, he moved to Chennai to pursue a degree in commerce at the University of Madras. In 2009, he won the Best Student Award at the annual college festival. He later dropped out of university and went to London to study filmmaking at the London Film Academy. After graduating from the academy, he returned to India and worked as a production assistant for TV show “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge”. In 2012, he auditioned for the reality singing contest Star Voice and became one of the finalists. During the competition, he sang songs composed by A.R. Rahman. After the show, he signed up with Sony Music India and began working on his debut album.

Career
The soundtrack album for 3 became a major commercial success upon release. In 2012, the album topped the iTunes charts worldwide. Upon release, the song “Aa Nuvvu Naaku Nenu” garnered immense popularity among audiences, becoming one of the most popular tracks of the year. The song was named Song of the Year by many publications including Zee Music Awards, Filmfare Award South, Radio Mirchi Music Awards, Times of India, and Indian Express. At the same ceremony, the album itself was awarded Best Album Of The Year. The song “Nammavar” was nominated for the National Film Award for Best Lyrics.
In addition to the three singles, the album included four additional songs: “Kadhal En Kadhal”, “Thangaiyya”, “Kaatrinile”, and “Rajathandiyil”. All of these songs were composed by Anirudh himself except “Kaatrinile” which was written by Ghibran.
2011–12: Breakthrough
3 marked the beginning of a successful collaboration between Anirudh and Dhanush. After working together on 2 Idiots and Thuppakki, the duo went on to work together again in Vada Chennai (2013), Kadal (2014), and Kaaval (2015). Their films collectively earned over Rs. 250 crores at the box office. They later collaborated on 7aum Arivu (2016) and Vishwaroopam 2 (2017).
