The singer, actor and screenwriter died of cancer aged 50. He had been diagnosed in 1983, and his health deteriorated rapidly over the following months. His final performance was at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 3 December 1984.
Sandhu was born in Lahore, Pakistan, into a Sikh family. When he was five, his parents moved to England where he grew up in Surrey. He attended the University of Leeds, where he studied English Literature and Drama. At university he met fellow student Jane Asher, whom he married in 1970. They divorced in 1975. In 1976, he began writing scripts for TV programmes including The Sweeney, Z Cars and Minder. He wrote the screenplay for the 1977 film Performance, starring Richard Attenborough and Vanessa Redgrave.
In 1981, Sandhu took part in the BBC programme I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, hosted by John Cleese, where he was voted out of the show after failing to answer questions correctly. This led him to write the book How Not To Be Seen On Television.
He continued working on scripts for TV and film, including the 1982 comedy film Scandalous Me!, directed by David Leland, and the 1986 drama film The Dresser, written and directed by Mike Figgis.
Sandhu won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for 1987’s Gandhi, based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, which starred Ben Kingsley as the Indian leader. He also wrote the screenplay for 1988’s Dead Again, starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore.
Sandhu later worked with director Peter Jackson on the script for 1994’s Heavenly Creatures, about the friendship between teenage girls Juliet Hulme and Abigail Fisher. The film received four nominations at the 67th British Academy Film Awards, winning three awards – Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.
After completing work on Heavenly Creatures, Sandhu returned to India and spent some time living there. He later lived in Los Angeles, California.
