Bad Bunny (born J Balvin; June 30, 1990), better known simply as Bad Bunny, is a Puerto Rican rapper, songwriter, record producer, dancer, actor, model, fashion designer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and social activist. He rose to prominence in 2017 following his single “I Like It”, which reached number one in multiple countries including the United States and Canada. His debut studio album El Mal Querer (2017) debuted atop the US Billboard 200 chart, making him the second Latin artist to achieve such feat. In 2018 he collaborated with Drake on the track “MIA” off his album Scorpion. On January 31, 2020, he released his sophomore studio album X100PRE, marking his first release since signing with Sony Music Latin.
Born Juan Luis Rodríguez Calderón in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, he moved to Orlando, Florida, where he attended high school. At age 16, he relocated to Miami, Florida, to attend college at Florida International University. While attending FIU, he began writing songs under the stage name “J Balvin”. After graduating in 2011, he worked as a DJ while continuing to write music, eventually releasing his first mixtape, titled Mi Gente, in 2012. Later that same year, he signed with Cash Money Records and subsequently changed his stage name to “Bad Bunny.”
In 2013, he released his first major label project, titled Los Vaqueros, which included collaborations with fellow artists like Nicky Jam, Farruko, Zion & Lennox, Yandel, Daddy Yankee, among others. The album peaked at number 12 on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. In 2016, he released his first English language EP, titled Boricua, which was followed by his first full length Spanish language album, titled Energía. Both albums performed well commercially, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums charts.
He won Best New Artist at the Premios Juventud awards ceremony in 2016.
On May 2, 2017, he announced via Twitter that he had signed a recording contract with Universal Music Group and Republic Records. On December 13, 2017, it was confirmed that he had signed a joint venture deal with Sony Music Latin. On April 17, 2018, he released his third studio album, titled El Mal Querer, which debuted at number one on both the US Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart.
