The quartet — known simply as Blackpink — dropped their debut EP Square One on Friday (Nov. 3), featuring the lead single “Square One.” The song marks the K-pop act’s official entry into the music scene, following their successful promotions on reality competition show Produce 101 Season 2.
The foursome are part of YG Entertainment’s stable of artists, including labelmates BTS and BIGBANG. The group is expected to release new material throughout 2017.
Career
– On February 28, 2017, she debuted with her fellow members on Mnet’s reality competition show The Show.
– In August 2018, she became the youngest female solo artist to debut at number one on Billboard’s World Album Chart with her self-titled EP album.
– Her second studio album, Square One, was released on July 19, 2019.
– Her third EP, Rosemont, was released on November 21, 2019.
2016–2017: Debut, rising popularity, and commercial success
The members of BLACKPINK are known for being one of the most popular K-pop groups in recent years, due to their unique style and catchy music. They debuted in July 2016 with the song “Boombayah”, and quickly rose to fame thanks to their viral hit, “DDU-DU DDU-DU”. Their first EP, We Are Bulletproof Pt.1, was released in November 2016, followed by another EP, titled, in February 2017. In April 2017, the group released their first full-length studio album, titled, and it became the best selling album in South Korea in 2017. Their second EP, titled, was released in June 2017, and topped the Gaon Album Chart. In December 2017, the group released a third EP, titled, and it sold over 2 million copies within just three days of its release.
In 2018, BLACKPINK won several awards including Best Artist at the MelOn Music Awards, Best Female Group at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, and Best International Pop/Rock Band at the iHeartRadio MuchMusic Video Awards. At the same ceremony, they received the award for Favorite Korean Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards. In September 2018, BLACKPINK was named the Most Popular Girl Group at the American Music Awards.
BLACKPINK has been described as having a distinct image, characterized by their bright pink hair color and matching outfits. The group often performs choreography that incorporates dance moves such as twerks, cartwheels, splits, and high kicks. They perform during their live performances wearing short skirts and revealing tops, while some songs feature suggestive lyrics and themes.
Their fashion sense has also helped define their image, with many fans describing them as modern day Barbie dolls. Their clothing lines include items ranging from dresses to swimsuits, and even underwear. The group has collaborated with brands like Louis Vuitton, H&M, Adidas, MAC Cosmetics, and Sephora.
2018–2019: International breakthrough and first world tour
Blackpink began their international career in 2017 with the release of their debut single “Boombayah,” which reached number one on both the Gaon Digital Chart and Billboard World Digital Songs chart. The song went on to win Song of the Year at the Golden Disk Awards and Best Dance Performance at the MelOn Music Awards. Their second studio album,Square Up, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 Album chart. The group followed up with their first full-length concert tour, Blackpink World Tour, which saw over 150,000 fans attend shows around the globe. They performed on major music festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, KCON NY, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Korea.
In 2018, Blackpink continued to expand their fanbase internationally with the release of their first EP Square Up In South Korea. The EP debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and topped iTunes charts in multiple countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and US. With the success of Square Up In South Korea, Blackpink announced their first ever world tour, Blackpink Tour 2018, which kicked off in Seoul on August 3 and concluded in Tokyo on November 30. The tour consisted of nine shows in total, with five dates in Asia and four in North America.
The group’s popularity continued to grow in 2019 with the release of their second EP Square Up Pt 2 in February. The EP peaked atop the iTunes charts in several countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The group’s third EP Square Up Part 3 was released in September.
2020–2021: The Album and The Show
On April 22, it was revealed that BLACKPINK had signed a contract with Sony Music Korea, and would work with producers including Teddy Park, Max Martin, and RAYE.
The group debuted their first Japanese single, “” on September 21, 2020.
Blackpink’s first Korean studio album,, was released on October 2, 2020.
The group’s first documentary film,was released on November 25, 2020.

2022–present: Born Pink
Blackpink are set to return with a brand new album in 2020.
The girl group recently dropped their latest single “DDU DDU DU,” featuring British rapper Stormzy. The track marks the comeback of the K-pop girl band following the success of their debut EP Square One in 2016.
On July 6, YG Entertainment announced via Instagram that Blackpink would soon begin work on a follow up to their debut EP.
In a post accompanying the announcement, YG stated that the girls had been working diligently on their next project since early June.
They also shared that the group was in the final stages recording for a new album.
YG further added that the group would embark upon their second world tour at some point during the year.
