Arijit Singh

The singer known as Arijit Singh has been making waves since he burst onto the international music scene in 2013. He’s collaborated with some of the biggest names in pop – including Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, and Bollywood stars like Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan – while his own chart success has seen him become one of India’s most popular exports.

Singh grew up listening to Indian classical musicians like Ravi Shankar and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, and began playing instruments himself at age 12. His father encouraged him to pursue a career in music, and soon after he joined the family band, Singh formed his own group called Jassi Jasoos. In 2012, he signed with Sony Music India, releasing his debut album, Aaja Nachle.

In 2013, Singh won the BBC World Sound of… award, beating out artists like Adele and Coldplay. That same year, he performed alongside Sheeran at London’s Hyde Park; it was there that the pair recorded a song together, “Paradise.” Their collaboration went viral, topping YouTube charts worldwide, and earned them both Grammy nominations.

Since then, Singh has continued to release albums, collaborating with big names such as Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé, and Rihanna. He’s also scored several films, including 2016’s Hindi blockbuster Dangal, starring Salman Khan. And despite being based in Canada, he’s found fans across the globe, performing in countries around the world.

Early life

Singh was born on 25 April 1988 in New Delhi, India. His father, Jagdish Singh, is a businessman based in Mumbai while his mother, Suvarna Singh, runs her own boutique clothing store named “Suvarnas”. When he was young, he used to accompany his parents around town. At age 10, he began learning piano and violin. At 12, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur where he studied mechanical engineering. He graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 2007.

His family moved to Singapore in 2008. There, he attended Raffles Junior College, where he majored in English Literature and History. In 2010, he entered Trinity College London to study law. While studying there, he played cello in the college orchestra. He dropped out of university in 2012 and returned to Singapore.

In 2013, he auditioned for the reality show Rising Star, where he performed the song “I am Not Your Lover”. He was one of three contestants eliminated during auditions.

In 2014, he participated in season 2 of The Voice Kids and won the competition. This led him to release his debut single “Aaj Ki Baat”, which became a number-one hit in Singapore. He signed a recording deal with Sony Music Entertainment Asia and released his self-titled debut album in August 2014. The following month, he represented Singapore in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song “Meri Jaan”. He finished sixth overall.

He later collaborated with American singer Katy Perry on her 2016 single “Chained To The Rhythm”, which reached number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, Switzerland, UK, US Billboard Hot 100 and US Mainstream Top 40 charts.

In 2017, he released his second studio album titled “Guns & Roses”, featuring collaborations with artists such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Sia, Camila Cabello, Halsey, Khalid, Travis Scott and Post Malone. The album received positive reviews from critics and debuted atop the ARIA Album Chart, becoming his highest charting solo effort in Australia. It was certified platinum by Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

In 2018, he collaborated with rapper Cardi B on her single “Please Me”, which peaked at number four in the United States. Later that same year, he released his third studio album titled “Back Home”, which includes collaborations with rappers Big Sean, Yung Lean and Lil Pump. The album was preceded by the singles “Hurtin’ Me” and “Been Here All Day”.

On 28 February 2020, it was announced that Arijit had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

Early career

Singh’s musical career began when he joined the Indian reality TV singing competition Fame Gurukul (Fame Gurukul), hosted by Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. In 2005, he finished fifth out of 50 contestants. His performance included a rendition of the popular Hindi song “Yeh Mera Naam Hai”. At one point during the show, director Sanjay Leela Bhonsle noticed his potential and asked him to perform a song called “Yun Shabnam” for his next film. However, it was later dropped due to changes in the script.

In 2006, Singh sang the song “Jana Gaya Paani” in the movie Jannat 2. This song became very famous and was even covered by Pakistani singer Ali Zafar.

During the same year, he performed the song “Saawan Ki Rang” in the movie Saawariya, written by Sameer Anjaan. The song was sung by Arijit Singh and composed by Pritam Chakraborty. The song went on to become a huge hit among the masses.

After Saawariya, Singh recorded the soundtrack of the 2008 comedy drama film Love Story 2050. The album includes songs like “Aaj Mere Watan Ke Logo” and “Kuch Toh Log Kahenge”.

His debut solo album, titled Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, was released in August 2009. The album features nine tracks including “Maine Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya” and “Tumse Milenge Humara.” It topped the charts upon release.

He has been nominated for four Filmfare Awards, winning Best Male Playback Singer for the song “Main Hoon Heroine” from the 2010 romantic drama film Omkara.

Later in 2011, he collaborated with composer Vishal–Shekhar for the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” in the movie Raavan. The song was well received and became a major chartbuster.


– Singing in Hindi cinema: His career began with the song “Aayega Toofan” from the film, which was composed by Sajid Wajid.

– Singing in Tamil cinema: His first Tamil film was the soundtrack album of the 2013 romantic comedy, where he sang the song “Yen Manasu Neethipennu” composed by Srikanth Deva.

– Singing for Hollywood: His first English language film was the song “Ooh La La” from, which was composed by A. R. Rahman and written by Gulzar.

– Collaborations: He collaborated with Sajid–Wahid again for the song “Chammak Challo” from, which was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Sajid–Waiwad.

– Collaboration with AR Rahman: For his second collaboration with AR Rahman, he sang the song “Lootera” from, which was co-written by AR Rahman and Gulzar.

– First collaboration with AR Rahman: His first collaboration with AR Rahman was the song “Aye Muthala Mudhal” from, which was penned by AR Rahman and composed by AR Rahman.

– Collaboration for Mickey Virus: Singh worked with AR Rahman once again for the song “Mickey Virus”, which was composed by AR Rahman and written by AR Rahman.


Singh got the opportunity to perform two songs with his childhood heroes – Sajid Wajid and AR Rahman. Both music directors worked together on films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Saathiya, Kuch Naa Kaho, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, etc. Their collaboration began in 2013 and continued till 2016.The duo had been working on the soundtrack of 18 since 2011. But it took three years for the film to release. During this period, there were rumours about the project being shelved because of financial issues. However, the team always maintained that it was just a matter of time before the movie came out.

In 2014, Singh got the opportunity to work with both music directors. He performed two tracks on the album – “Chalte Chalte” and “Kaun Hai Mera Preet Parayana”. These are some of his most popular numbers.

The singer shared the screen space with actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Huma Qureshi, Shraddha Kapoor, among others.


Singh made his Tamil debut in

In 2015, Chinmayi recorded a romantic duet with Arijit titled “Sooiyaan”. Written by Irshad Kamal and Amit Trivedi, the song was sung by both singers. A music video featuring the duo performing the track was released on YouTube on 27 June 2015. The song became popular among Indian youth within days of release.

Arijit shot his directorial debut in

Titled Bhalobasaar Rajnamchari, it is a Bengalee feature film composed of seven short films. Directed by Arijit, the film features Singh as one of the main leads along with actress Chanchala Mukherjee.

Co-written by Singh, the script of the film has been submitted to several international film festivals.


Singh released her debut single “Fitoor” in January 2016. Written by Amit Trivedi, the song became a huge hit. In February 2016, he wrote another song called “Yeh Fitoor”, sung by him along with Tulsi Kumar. This was followed by the release of “Soch Na Sakes” in April 2016, which was a duet with Tulsiya Kumar. He also sang the title track of the film Airlift alongside Tulsi Kumar. His latest song “Lo Maan Liye” was part of the soundtrack of the movie Raaz Reboot.


Akshay Kumar sings ‘Raees’ song ‘Zaalima’ for SRK

In July 2017, Akshay Kumar had sung a song titled “Zaalima” for Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film Raees. The song is composed by Pritam and written by Amitabha Bhattacharya while the music video features Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

The song was shot at the stunning locations of Goa and Mumbai. Akshay Kumar performs the song live on stage along with his co-stars.

He also sang the song “Zaalima”.
