Future (rapper)
Rapper Future was born on Nov. 20, 1983, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in Stone Mountain, Georgia. His father, Gerald, worked as a police officer and his mother, Lisa, was a teacher.
He began rapping while he was still in high school and dropped out of college to focus on music. In 2003, he signed with Roc-A-Fella Records, where he collaborated with Jay Z and Kanye West. In 2007, he left Roc-A-Fellas to sign with Cash Money Records.
In 2010, he released his debut album Pluto, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. His second studio album, FUTURE, came out in 2013 and it peaked at number three on the same chart.
His third studio album, HNDRXX, came out in 2016 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200.
Future has sold over 9 million albums worldwide and has had 14 singles reach the top 10 of the Hot 100.
Early life and career beginnings
Future was born on November 20th, 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in the city’s 7th Ward neighborhood, where he attended John Ehret High School. As a teenager, Future became involved in the local rap scene, rapping under the pseudonym “Nayvadius DeMunn Wilburn.” In 2000, while still attending high school, Future joined the Dungeon Family, a group founded by fellow New Orleanian Lil’ Wayne.
In 2003, Future signed a deal with Universal Records and released his debut album Pluto, featuring production from Rockwilder, Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, and others. The album received mixed reviews from critics, although it reached number five on Billboard 200 chart. A single, “A Milli,” was released in 2004. Future followed up Pluto with three additional albums; Late Nights & Early Mornings (2005), Tromaville (2007), and So Far Gone (2009). All four albums failed to match the commercial success of Pluto, however, and Future left Universal following the release of Late Night & Early Morning.
From 2007 to 2009, Future toured extensively throughout North America and Europe with a live band, playing venues such as Madison Square Garden and Wembley Stadium. During this period, Future worked on several projects independently,
Career
Future spent much of 2011 working on his music career, releasing three mixtapes—Streetz Calling, Monster and Pluto—before he signed with Epic Records in September. He dropped his first single, “I Won,” featuring Lil Wayne, on October 15, 2011. But it wasn’t until November 2011, when Future became one of the most talked about artists in hip hop, that he really broke out. On November 10, Future performed at the BET Hip Hop Awards. The performance included appearances by Drake, Rick Ross, Kanye West, Jeezy, Wale, Pusha T, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Young Jeezy, Meek Mill, DJ Drama and Wiz Khalifa. The following day, Future released his second single, “Tony Montana.” The song went double platinum within weeks of its release.
The success continued into early 2012. His third single, “Karate Chop,” debuted at number five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in February. A few months later, Future released his debut album, Pluto, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. The album sold over 50,000 copies in its first week and eventually reached gold status. By May 2012, Future had become arguably the biggest star in rap since Jay Z.
