Early life
Sivan was born in Johannesberg, South Africa, the son of Laurelle and Shaun Mellet, entrepreneurs. He grew up in Johannesburg, attended high school at Sandringham High School, and studied film at New York University. His family moved to Los Angeles in 2008, where he began studying music at the Musicians Institute.
Career
Sivan began his music career in 2011, singing in the choir at Trinity College School in Perth, Western Australia. He performed at the annual Channel 7 telethon every year from 2005–2008, and again in 2010. In 2012, Sivan won the Australian Young Jazz Musician Award, presented by the Australian Institute of Jazz Studies.
In 2013, he released his debut album, Bloom, which debuted at number one on the ARIA Album Charts. The album produced three singles, including “YOLO”, featuring rapper YG, which peaked at number one on the charts. “Bloom” became the most streamed song in Australia in 2014.
On 5 June 2013, Siva announced that he had signed a recording contract with EMI Records Australia and Capitol Records. Later that year, he released his second studio album, titled A Moment Apart, which debuted at number four on the ARIA Albums Chart. Its lead single, “My Same,” reached number seven on the ARIA Singles Chart.
His third studio album, BANG!, was released on 11 November 2016. The album features collaborations with artists such as Big Sean and Khalid.
Sivan’s fourth studio album, Infinity, was released on 8 April 2018. The album debuted atop the ARIA Albums chart, becoming his highest selling album and earning him triple platinum certification.
The singer has been nominated for six awards at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance. At the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, he received nominations for Best Male Video and Best Song For Visual Media for “YOLO”.
