In 1978, he moved to Nashville and joined the band The Rambos. While playing in The Rambos, he met singer/songwriter Amy Grant, who invited him to join her backing group, The Motherhood, as lead guitarist.

Chapman left The Rambos to pursue a solo career in 1981. His debut single, “Father’s Eyes,” became a hit in 1983. It won the Dove award for Song of the Year.

His followup singles included “Finally,” “I’ll Be There For You,” and “The Power.”

He wrote songs for several movies, including Ernest Goes To Camp in 1987.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he toured extensively as an opening act for such acts as Michael Bolton, Phil Keaggy, Bill Gaither, Mark Lowry, Steve Green, and Ricky Skaggs.

In 1992, he signed a contract with Word Records and released his first studio album, Brave Heart. The album produced three Top 10 hits: “Finally,” “Don’t Give Up on Us,” and “Carry Me Home.”

Television career

In the middle of 1996, the Nashville Network announced that Chapman had been hired to replace Tom Wopat, who left the network to become a regular on ABC’s Home Improvement. Chapman hosted the nightly talk show, Prime TimeCountry, which aired weeknights at 7 p.m. ET/PT. The program replaced the long-running syndicated program Good Morning America Weekend Edition, which moved to another night.

The show ended after 1999. Chapman went on to produce MuzikMafia on CMT as well appearing numerous times on the channel’s 13 Music City Tonight franchise. He also produced several episodes of CMT’s reality competition series, Battle Creek, and served as executive producer of the network’s live concert specials.

Gary Chapman hosts the weekly syndicated radio program “CCM Countdown.” He is also the author of several best-selling books including “The Five Love Languages,” “How To Win Friends & Influence People,” and “When God Doesn’t Answer Prayers.” His wife Sheryl is also a Christian speaker.

Personal life

Chapman grew up in Nashville, Tennessee with his mother, father and older sister, Toni. His father, Jimmie Lee Chapman Sr., died in 1972 when he was 11 years old. He attended high school at Brentwood Academy where he played football and basketball. After graduating from high school, he studied music at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1977, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.

In 1978, he signed with Capitol Records and recorded his debut album, I Love You Because, produced by David Foster. The album included the singles “I’ll Be There For You,” “Love Is Alive,” and “If You Were Here Tonight.” It peaked at number 4 on Billboard magazine’s Top Pop Albums chart. In 1979, he released another single, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”. The song was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Chapman performed it during the 1980 Grammy Awards ceremony.

On January 25, 1981, he released his second studio album, titled Don’t Cry Out Loud. The album included the hit songs “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” and “The Tracks of my Tears”. It reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and won him
