Anuradha Paudwal

The Indian playback singer died today (27 October), aged 83. She had been battling cancer since May 2017.

Born in Mumbai, she began her career singing jingles for films in the 1950s. Her voice earned her the nickname “the Nightingale”. In 1959, she won the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song “Aa Re Gaya”, composed by Ravi.

She sang many songs for Bollywood classics such as Dil Deke Dekho (“Mera Naam Joker”), Chori Meri Jaan (“Kabhi Kabhie”) and Aayega Toofan (“Humko Tumse Milte Hain”).

In 1961, she performed in the film Sholay alongside Amitabh Bachchan. She recorded several hit duets with him including “Chal Chal Mere Bhaiya”, “Tujhe Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai” and “Ek Baap Saajan Ke”.

Her most famous duet was “O Teraa Jahaan”, sung with Mohammed Rafi. The pair went on to record over 50 hits together.

She received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Early days and Success

Anuradha Paudwala was born on April 15, 1948, in Mumbai, India. Her father was a musician while her mother was a singer. He used to play violin and sing folk songs. In fact, he had trained his daughter in singing too. At the age of six, she began learning classical music under Pandit Shankarrao Chavan.

In 1972, she received her training in Carnatic music under Sri Veena Venkataraman. In 1974, she joined Film Academy in Chennai. There she learnt Bollywood style dance. Later she moved to Bombay where she worked in films like Nai Roshni and Abhimaan.

She got her break in 1980 when she sung for the movie Hero starring Amitabh Bachchan. She sang the song Tu meri janu hai, which became very famous. This song was composed by Sapan Jagmohan.

After that, she sang many songs for movies such as Sholay, Aashiqui, Kaun Banega Crorepati, etc. She also sang for some TV serials including Hum Paanch, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, etc.

Work with other singers

She started her career at the age of 10. Her father wanted her to become a teacher. But she had a dream of becoming a singer. So, he supported her decision and encouraged her. Later, she joined All India Radio. There she got trained under famous playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh. From there, she moved into films. She sang songs for some Hindi movies including Anari, Chori Chori, Do Teen Jaane Na, Phir Wohi Raat, Shola Aur Shabnam, Dil Se.., etc. She has sung over 1000 songs till date. She has worked with 23 singers.

Legacy

Anuradha Paudwala has been singing since she was eight years old. She had her first break when she sang a song for the movie Aashiqui. After that, she got many offers and even began working with renowned composers like Ravi Shankar, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Sajjad Ali, Naushad, Bappi Lahiri, Kalyanji Anandji etc.
