The oceans are home to many different types of creatures. Some fish swim around while others hide under rocks or even inside coral reefs. There are jellyfish, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks, octopuses and much more. This list includes some of the most interesting marine life you might find in the ocean. The ocean covers almost three- quarters of the earth’s surface. There are some estimates that it contains over 1 million different kinds of life. Most people know that fish live in the sea, but did you know there are whales, sharks, jellyfish, octopuses, squid, eels, crabs, lobsters, clams, molluscs, starfish, corals, crustaceans, insects, worms, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, plants and fungi?
In fact, there are probably more species of marine creatures than those found on land. Some scientists believe that the total number of marine species may even exceed 1 million.
There are lots of reasons why we care about the ocean. It provides us with food, water, oxygen, air conditioning, energy, medicines and much more. We depend upon the ocean for our very survival. But what does it mean to be ‘oceanic’? What do we really know about the ocean? And how can we protect it?
Albatrosses are large birds found in oceans worldwide. They are known for their ability to glide effortlessly across vast stretches of water. In fact, some species can travel thousands of miles without stopping. Their name originates from the Greek word “alba” meaning white, referring to the color of their plumage.
There are around 21 species of Albatross (scientists dispute the exact number), making it one of the largest bird families on Earth. Together they make up the diomedeid family. Most albatross species feed on fish, squid and crustaceans. Some species dive into the ocean depths in pursuit of prey while others hunt near the surface.
The majority of albatross species nest on islands or rocky coasts. However, there are several species that breed on open sea platforms. These include the wandering albatross, the giant petrel, the black-footed albatross and the light-mantled albatross.
The Wandering Albatross is a medium sized seabird which breeds on remote islands in the Southern Ocean. Its diet consists mainly of krill, small shrimps, fish and squid. The Wandering Albatross has an average lifespan of 50 years.
The Giant Petrels are large seabirds that have a wingspan of approximately 2 meters. They are named after the Latin word for “small”. The Giant Petrels’ diet consists mainly of fish and squid. They also eat other sea animals such as shrimp, crab and cephalopods.
Black-Footed Albatrosses are large seabirds which have a wingspan of around 3 metres. They are named after their dark feet. Black-Footed Albatroses are mostly pelagic birds that spend most of their time at sea. They feed on fish, squid, crustaceans and cephalopod. They migrate between tropical and subtropical waters.
