2002–2006: Songs About Jane and Dusick’s departure
Between the time that we started working on our second record, we had been touring constantly, doing some pretty intense work, and I think it really took a toll on us. We weren’t necessarily having fun anymore. So we went into the studio and recorded, because we wanted to make another record, but we didn’t want to do what we’d done before. And we thought, “Well, let’s try something different.”
We did in 2002, and it was very successful, and that gave us confidence that maybe we could do something else again. But it wasn’t exactly like we wanted to go out there and tour every single night. We just felt like we needed a break. When you’re touring constantly, you don’t really have much downtime. You’re always thinking about where you’re playing next, how you’re going to rehearse, what you’re going to eat, etc., and it’s hard to take care of yourself. So we figured that we needed a break, and we knew that we couldn’t stop working completely, so we figured we’d just start writing songs and see what happened.
I remember sitting down one day, and I wrote “. It came together
