Sonu Nigam
Born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, Sonu Nigam began his career as a playback singer in Hindi films. He rose to fame with his song “Aa Gale Lag Ja”, sung along with Kavita Krishnamurthy for the film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995. His success continued with songs like “Tu Hai Meri Love Story” and “Kuch Toh Log Kahenge”. In 2001 he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer – Pop for his work in the movie Lagaan. He received the National Film Awards twice, once for best male voice and again for best background score.
In 2002, he sang for the soundtrack album of the Bollywood blockbuster Devdas, composed by A. R. Rahman. This marked the beginning of a long collaboration between Nigam and Rahman. They worked together on several projects including the 2003 hit Ghajini, the 2004 blockbuster Slumdog Millionaire, the 2005 romantic drama Ishqiya, the 2006 action thriller Raavan and the 2007 musical Bombay Dreams. Nigam performed the duet “Ishq Dali Jindagi” with Katrina Kaif for the latter film.
Nigam collaborated with composer Vishal–Shekhar for the 2008 film Delhi–6, which earned him another nomination for the Filmfare award for Best Male Playback singing.
Life and background
Sonu Nigam was born in Faridabad, India. His mother, Shobha Nigam, is a housewife while his father Agam Kumar is a businessman. He has one elder sister, Neelima Nigam, and three younger brothers, Ankit, Aditya and Abhishek Nigam. He studied up to Class 12th at Sainik School, Sector 31, Chandigarh. After graduating from school, Nigam worked as a sales executive in a software firm. In 1999, Nigam met his future wife Madhurima Mishra, who was working as a model. They got engaged in 2001 and married in 2002. Their daughter Avantika Nigam was born on 20 September 2003. Nigam and Mishra separated in 2007. On 13 May 2008, Nigam filed for divorce, claiming that he wanted to devote himself to music full-time. However, the couple reconciled again in 2009 and remarried on 25 January 2010.
Nigam has stated that he considers himself to be a very spiritual person, and often meditates and prays throughout the day. He believes that God gives him inspiration every morning. Nigam is known to keep a clean lifestyle, and does not drink alcohol. He says that he follows a vegetarian diet. Nigam claims to follow astrology, and says that it helps him understand people better. Nigam likes listening to Indian classical music, particularly Raag Bhairavi.
In 2012, Nigam was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. He underwent surgery to correct the problem in 2013.
1993–1999: Starting of his career
Sonu Nigam made his debut in Bollywood singing the song “Mere Rang Mein Teray” for the film “Kalyug”. This song became very famous because it was used in the opening credits of the 1994 blockbuster hit film “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”. He sang songs like “Nachke Dikha”, “Tumse Milenge Humko” and “Chanda Na Rahenge”. In 1996, he recorded a duet with Kajol titled “Ek Haseena Thi”.
In 1997, he sang the theme song of the film “Saudagar”, “Haath Se Haath Sona Hai”. He sang “Yeh Ishq Naa Dekho” for the film “Dekh Bhai Dekh”. In 1998, he sang “Tu Hi Tu Hi Toh Aisi Jise” for the film “Lakhon mein piya”. In 1999, he sang the song “Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander” for the film “Sikander”.
He also sang the song “Main Aur Main Tera” for the film “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”. In 2000, he sang the song, “Woh Meri Piya” for the film, “Aap Ke Side Effects”. In 2001, he sang the song for the film “Phir Subah Hogi”. In 2002, he sang “Tujhe Dekha To” for the film “Zinda”. In 2003, he sang “Suno Suno” for the film “Ab Tak Chappan”. In 2004, he sang the song ‘”Mera Pyaara Phool”‘ for the film “Aitraaz”. In 2005, he sang the song for the film “Jaana Ishtamaasha”. 2000-2010s: Career peak and multiple awards and nominations
Nigam rose to fame in 2000 with his debut album, Main Hoon Na, which sold over one million copies worldwide, making it the fastest selling Hindi music album ever. He followed up with a string of hits, including “Tu Hai Mera,” “Jaan Pehechan Geet,” “Choli ke peechhenge,” “Ik Junoon”, “Aankhon Mein Teri Kahaani” and “Hum Toh Kaisey.” The latter became a chartbuster, topping the charts across India.
In 2002, he won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Maine Pyaar Kyun?” from the movie Hum Kisise Kum Naheen. He went on to win three more Filmfare Awards—Best Male Playback Singer for “Kabhi Kabhi Yeh Nazara” from the same movie; Best Lyrics for “Yeh Wada Rakhwala”; and Best Music Director for “Ishq Ishq Ishwar”.
He received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his performance in the 2003 hit Bollywood film Devdas. In 2004, he won the Film Fare Critics Award for Best Actor for his role in the critically acclaimed film Om Shanti Om.
His next release, 2005’s Ek Thi Daayan, earned him another four Filmfare Awards—Best Lyricist for “Ek Do Teen”, Best Male Playback Singer, Best Songwriter and Best Background Score.
In 2006, he won the Screen Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role for his portrayal of a mentally challenged man in the film Dostana.
In 2009, he won the Zee Cine Award for Best Male Play Back Singer for the song “Main Tujhe Salaam” from the film Jodha Akbar.
In 2010, he won the Star Screen Award for Best Male PlayBack Singer for the song “Teri Mehbooba” from the movie Jab We Met.
2010–present: Continuing work in Bollywood and multiple concerts and several English Collaborations
In 2010, Sonu Sang “Chori Kya Rishta” from the movie Agneepath, which was sung by Arijit Singh. This song became very famous and got him recognition. He received the best male vocal award at the Mirchi Music Awards. In 2011 he worked with Britney Spears on her single I Want To Go. In 2012, he sang in the film Abhi Mujhe Meri Kasam, where he sang the song “Abhi Mujhe”. This song became very famous. In 2013, he sang the song “Tere Liye” in the movie Raanjhaa. In 2014, he sang the song ‘Kuch Toh Log Kahenge’, in the movie Jolly LLB 2. In 2016, he sang the song Aaj Ki Baat Hai in the movie Badlapur. In 2017, he sang the song Chori Chori in the movie Kapoor & Sons. In 2018, he sang the song Tu Hi Thata Hai in the movie Tiger Zinda Hai. In 2019, he sang the song Main Tera Hero in the movie Bharat. In 2020, he sang the song Khoobsurat in the movie Joker.
