2017–2018: Damn, Black Panther soundtrack and hiatus
Lamar put together one of the most successful soundtracks of all time with his work on the Black Panther soundtrack. His songs “Humble”, “King’s Dead”, “All the Stars,” and “Mortal Man” are some of the best tracks off the album. He even helped produce another track called “Black Boy Fly.” With such great success, it seemed like he had no reason to stop making music. But Lamar did. Instead of releasing a full length project, he opted to release three singles over the course of a few months. The first came out on February 17th, 2017, titled “The Heart Part 4.” Then, just a week later, he dropped the second single, titled “.” Finally, on March 23rd, 2017, Lamar released the third and final single off the project, titled “Mortal Man.” All three singles received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. However, none of the singles managed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. So what happened? Well, according to Genius, Lamar’s label Warner Chappell Music wanted him to focus solely on his acting career. They felt that he wasn’t doing enough promotion for the project, and they didn’t want to risk losing money on the project.
